The Train Assistant Trainee / Intern will assist the Train Driver in the safe and efficient operation of various types of trains and locomotives (airbrake, vacuum, high speed, heavy haul, and passenger trains). This role is crucial in ensuring that freight and cargo reach their destination in a timely and secure manner, meeting customer expectations and operational standards.
- Sign on Duty: Report to the designated workplace and be allocated specific duties for the shift duration.
- Locomotive and Train Preparation: Prepare locomotives and trains for departure by ensuring all pre-trip preparations adhere to roadworthiness, train working rules, and safety standards.
- Communication Setup: Ensure that communication equipment is ready and operational for the duration of the shift.
- Shunting Operations: Execute shunting activities at sidings and along the route, following safety protocols to enhance operational efficiency.
- Assistance to Train Driver: Provide support to the Train Driver during transit to ensure safe and punctual movement of trains, preventing delays or damage to locomotives, wagons, tracks, or other equipment.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to all safety standards and procedures, contributing to a safe and effective working environment.
- Incident Reporting: Provide timely and accurate feedback to the Train Driver about any incidents or deviations encountered during the journey.
- Administrative Support: Assist with various administrative tasks, including the completion and submission of the Train Journal to the Section Manager after each shift to ensure accurate processing of monthly salaries.
- Grade 12 (Mathematics or Physical Science as a subject)
- Physical Fitness: Candidates must pass medical and safety behavioral risk assessments, which include testing for hearing, vision, mental fitness, and psychomotor ability (assessed through the Vienna Testing System).
- Age Requirement: Applicants must be at least 21 years old.
- Height: Minimum height of 1.6 meters.
- Physical Capability: Must be able to carry heavy objects.
- Certification: Successful completion of both theoretical and practical training to be certified as a Train Assistant and capable of working independently.
- Medical Surveillance: Willingness to undergo periodic medical evaluations and safety behavioral assessments, to be performed during the selection process and every 12 months thereafter.
